Abstract: Considering that international migration is primarily an urban issue—since it is at the local level where governments and other social actors are called upon to deal with increasingly diverse urban societies and to respond to their new demands for the city —this seminar will delve into the crucial challenge for contemporary cities of negotiating difference in public spaces. It will examine how urban policymakers and practitioners can either positively or negatively shape the inclusion potential of the cities they govern and plan. The seminar will also discuss how urban (non-)policies and practices can tangibly impact the right to the city for all, and how urban planning and design can either play a key role in accommodating differences and promoting spatial justice or risk spatial determinism and supporting those securitarian approaches that see migration and diversity as a problem rather than an opportunity.
