Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) View mapMetropolis International in collaboration with the Migration Research Center at Koç University (MiReKoc) are co-hosting a one-day conference ‘Urban Resilience, Policies and Futures’ in Istanbul at the Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) on May 13, 2022.
Urbanization and migration related issues play a crucial role in the transformation of our contemporary societies. It is projected that 68 per cent of the world’s population will live in urban areas in 2050 – an increase from 54 per cent in 2015. It appears that by 2050 there will be very few countries where rural shares of populations are expected to be higher than urban. The figures while not surprising, further highlight the crucial importance of discussing issues pertaining to urban resilience and futures at the intersection of research and policy. With the continued Covid-19 pandemic affecting various aspects of daily life, alongside long-standing issues of climate change, migration and asylum and the like, urban resilience and the resilience of residents takes centre stage once more. The conference thus serves as a platform for scholars, policymakers and practitioners, (involved in Metropolis and beyond the network) to present and debate issues pertaining to urban resilience using interdisciplinary approaches and from diverse perspectives. In addition, the conference is an opportunity to reflect on possible future changes that may affect achieving urban resilience especially in light of shifting economic practices, ongoing protracted urban displacements and rising populism.
The conference includes presentations on cities in Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt and Iran among others affected by situations of mass forced migration and other considerations. Local policies concerning refugees are key to understanding diverse refugee experiences as well as the ways migration, forced or voluntary, is incorporated in conceptions of urban resilience and futures. As part of the conference, municipal actors from Istanbul and Gaziantep will be invited to present on their experiences.
Registration is required to attend the conference in person or virtually. A maximum of 60 persons can attend in person. The conference will be hybrid in nature.
