Description

This year, International Migration is celebrating its 60th anniversary. In its initial years, the journal was strictly policy oriented and rather Euro-centric, reflecting the context immediately after the Second World War. Overtime, however, a trend from more descriptive, policy related, and state-centric issues to more scholarly, analytical, and migration-focused contributions could be observed.

Today, International Migration is evidently not the only academic journal in the field of international migration, migrant incorporation, racism and diversity. There are many more fully-fledged interdisciplinary academic journals, guided by an academic editorial board publishing articles after a solid blind peer-review process, and mainly targeting a readership of academic peers. These journals include Ethnic and Racial Studies, International Migration Review, Comparative Migration Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Studies, Migration Studies, Journal of Refugee Studies, Migration and Society and various others.

Most are interdisciplinary by their very nature, most enjoy numerous submissions (and employ high rejection rates which allows for better quality publications), and most have consistently high impact factors. But does that mean that these journals are on the right track? To what extent should they go beyond the academic environment and serve the wider community, businesses and policy makers? Most editorial boards are based in Europe or North America, but doesn’t the co-existence and connectedness of these centers with other, more peripheral parts of the worlds—often dubbed the ‘global North’ and ‘global South’—warrant a more sophisticated approach? Shouldn’t the authorship of scholars from the latter category be promoted, perhaps leading to a different type of questions and approaches?

The speakers—all coming from the world of academic journals—will offer their views on the current and future roles of academic journals in the field of migration. They will reflect on academic journals in general and their relation with the wider environment in particular.
