Title: The Refugees of the 21st century in the face of necropolitics: the cases of Yemen, Syria and Palestine.

Abstract: This research analyzes the 21st century refugee’s crisis in the Middle East. With Mbembe’s necropolitic perspective, the following research shows how necropolitics operates in the Middle East and how it conditions the lives of refugees and displaced people to a slow death. Yemen, Syria and Palestine are the cases of study as each one allows the study of one of Necropolitics notions (biopower, the state of emergency and the state of siege) and each one is a paradigmatic case in the refugee’s crisis. Necropolitics as a strategy of domination sets the image of the 21st century refugee to that of a collectivity subject to a slow death in the paradigmatic conflicts of the Middle East. The place that it leaves to life the devices implemented in the region question the idea of humanity.

Short bio: José René Torres is a PhD Global Development Studies student in the Autonomous University of Baja California. His research focus in the destabilization of the Middle East and the refugee’s crisis it originated. He is particularly interested in understanding how necropolitics operate in the crisis and how it conditions the lives of refugees to one characterized by a slow death. He looks to advance refugees theory, necropolitics perspective and in the comprehension of the 21st century refugee’s crisis.
